Summary: Dean and Cas have nothing but time on their hands. (7x23 coda)
Dean reads. He reads mysteries and crime thrillers, and a collection of Edgar Allan Poe stories. He reads the dictionary. He reads seventeen Stephen King novels in chronological order, and then starts again at the beginning. The bookshelf in his cottage is small, but Dean doesn’t mind; he never remembers very much, so he can re-read the same book over and over without getting bored. It passes the time.
Once in awhile he goes to the kitchen and makes himself something to eat. He never really feels hungry, but it seems like the right thing to do. He makes peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, macaroni and cheese, boils spaghetti and dumps on some canned tomato sauce. That’s all he ever finds in his cupboards, but Dean doesn’t mind the lack of variety.
He sits in front of the fire, on an old couch upholstered in brown corduroy. The seat cushions are well-worn, and Dean’s not sure if it’s him who broke them in, or whoever owned the couch before him. Did anyone own the couch before him? Those kinds of questions occur to him occasionally, but he never worries about them for long.
Cas comes to visit sometimes, Dean’s not really sure how often. Dean’s always glad to see him, even though he’s usually tired, and cold, and kind of weird when he shows up. Dean makes him take off his coat and sit by the fire, and Cas tells Dean stories. Dean gets the impression he doesn’t usually talk much, because sometimes he stumbles over his words, or loses his train of thought, or changes the subject mid-sentence, but Dean doesn’t mind. He likes the sound of Cas’ voice.
When he’s not telling stories, Cas likes to play games. There’s a shelf in Dean’s broom closet full of board games. The boxes are old and faded, torn and taped back together in places, but most of them are only missing a few pieces. When the instructions are missing Dean makes up the rules and cheats shamelessly, but he doesn’t think Cas minds. It all works out okay except for the times when Cas touches the game pieces and they turn to black ash under his hand, and even then he apologizes. Plus there are always more games in the closet.
I was gonna color it, but I am horrible at it. So it’s just lines for now.
If anyone wants to color it, go for it, just give credit back to this one.
However, I warn you: the end of this fic is not happy and it will leave your heart shattered and stomped on with no chance of you ever being able to pick it up and put it back in your chest. You’re going to need a transplant, but this fic’s ending will have diseased your chest cavity and any new heart you get will be infected and unusable to.
That being said, the rest of the fic is fucking beautiful and needs to be read over and over and over again.

Dean’s voice cracks when he says “Part of me always believed that you’d come back.” And it’s making it very difficult for me to believe that he’s delivering that line to anyone else but Cas.

Can someone please bring up Supernatural: It Gets Better to them? I mean, not in the Q&A, but I know that sometimes people get chance encounters with the boys or like breakfast meetings or whatever. And it’d be really awesome if someone asked them about it. Cause I still think this video needs to happen like three years ago.
Please?
It would take place during one of Dean and Sam’s hunts. Nothing special, just a monster of the week, maybe another kitsune or something. It’d be a fairly easy case, not too much thought required. So Dean and Sam go to this small, mom and pop diner that claims it’s got the best double bacon cheeseburger in America. Dean really doubts it, but there’s no harm in testing it out, right? Sam just rolls his eyes and orders a chicken sandwich with fries.
While they wait for their meals, Dean looks around, taking in the decor of the restaurant. It’s homey and warm, reminding him a little of Bobby. It hurts, so Dean looks away and out the window. He watches the people pass by and think they’re either a bunch of poor saps for being so oblivious to what’s really happening in the world, or the luckiest sons’a bitches ever. But he loses the thought almost immediately as he looks into the diner just across the street.
There’s a waiter there who looks too fucking familiar. The guy’s hair is almost the same, he’s just the right height, but he’s wearing jeans and a t-shirt, and fuck, Dean can’t see his eyes from this far.
So Dean stands up and takes off out the door and across the street, ignoring the way Sam yells after him. Dean’s gut knots uncontrollably and his heart pounds so fucking loud in his ears. He rushes into the new diner and stops dead in his tracks.
“Cas?” Dean calls out, his mouth moving before he can stop himself and think things through.
The waiter turns around and it’s all Dean can do not to run forward and hug the man like he should’ve so many times before. Because those blue eyes are seared in Dean’s mind, he’s dreamed of them over and over again for nearly a year.
“I’m sorry,” the waiter says. “Do we know each other?”
